Developing a Growth Mindset

Developing and maintaining a growth mindset is one of the keys to success in learning a martial art. A growth mindset is one in which you believe you can change, learn new things and improve.

A fixed mindset, by contrast, is one in which you do not believe you can learn new things and such a mindset is often rooted in self-limiting core beliefs. Fortunately, you learn to replace a fixed mindset with a growth one and Ninjutsu is a great way to do that.

Beginners, both adults and children, walk into their first class knowing nothing and often unsure how it’s going to go when they take their first step on to the mat. They struggle for a short while and then something magical happens – they start to learn and improve. And with the improvement comes increased confidence that they are able to learn and that’s the point at which their progress starts to fly. The great part is that they then carry this belief with them outside the dojo and into the rest of their lives.

In the video below, Singapore Ninjutsu instructors Nachum Kaplan and Hui Wen Tong – also a professional life coach and counsellor respectively at StayingSane101– discuss how to break out of your fixed mindset and how to develop a growth one.
